Introduction to the Agricultural and Environmental Data Archive

Authors: Ag Stephens and Michael Haft

Between 2010 and 2015, the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) worked in collaboration with King's College London (KCL) to build the infrastructure for the archive, and also with Centre for Environmental Data Archival (CEDA) to build a data model for archival that was standards compliant, and would be usable across many environmental science disciplines. The archive was originally built to house data from two Defra funded research platforms the Demonstration Test Catchments (DTC) and the Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Platform (AGHGP). Both of which have data in the archive. Defra funds a wide range of research and monitoring activities in the environmental sciences. It is recognised that the ongoing management of datasets generated by, and underpinning, this research are essential to the scientific process and its support for sound decision-making. In recent years it has become very important to be able to demonstrate the provenance of scientific datasets, showing how they were derived and their linkages to other datasets.
